Can DC chart a course out of Marvel’s shadow? That’s been the question for 10 years (since Christopher Nolan’s conclusion Batman trilogy). The new head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, thinks he has the answer, which is… the same thing the guys before him tried to do, basically.
“You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, these are known brands all over the world,” Zaslav said on the infamous WB results call (by The Hollywood Reporter). “We did a reset. We’ve restructured the business that we’re going to focus on, where there will be a team with a 10-year plan focused solely on DC. We believe we can build a much more sustainable business.
Oh, geez, a 10-year plan? Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? It’s a weird bit of corporate gaslighting to pretend we weren’t all over the place for Zack Snyder’s attempted verse. Also, it’s not really a “reset” when a single movie (bat girl) has been canceled and the rest – which is still tangled up in the Snyderverse to some degree – is go forward (Even the dreaded Glow film).
“It’s very similar to Alan Horn’s structure, [former Disney CEO] Bob Iger and Kevin Feige came together very effectively at Disney,” Zaslav said, as if copying and pasting the MCU playbook worked for any of his predecessors. He might want to consider Feige to be someone directors really want to work for; the boss of Marvel’ compassionate response at Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah after bat girl was canned only makes Zaslav and DC even worse in comparison.
But Zaslav is determined to “focus on quality” and “not release any movies until they’re ready,” which sounds more like the basics of the film industry than an innovative new strategy. “The goal is to grow the DC brand. To grow DC characters,” he said. “But also, our job is to protect the DC brand, and that’s what we’re going to do.” DC fans will surely sleep better knowing this is the guy protecting their beloved heroes.
